From Japan, with love: It's time to be a Sushiologist!
In the past, when it came to seafood, Indian restaurants would stick to providing prawn dishes or hilsha on their menu. Sea food did not feature prominently also because seafood has been expensive compared to chicken or other meat.

This has changed today. Indian restaurants today are trying to match up to International standards of cooking and even embracing International cuisines like Japanese cuisine which is very popular in the West.

At certain trends when it came to seafood and Sushi in India. 10% of all orders in Mumbai contained seafood items. Bangalore came in second with 8% of orders containing seafood. Delhi/NCR and Chennai have about 5% of seafood consumers, while Pune and Hyderabad are at 3% and 1% respectively.

The top 3 sea foods are prawns, crabs and hilsha. And going by our data, 53% men prefer seafood, while only 42% women prefer seafood.

Sushi eating in India is in great demand amongst the younger generation today 25-35 years. Earlier Sushi was a favourite amongst the older generation but today even children are Sushi lovers. This is also because it’s a healthier alternative. Most restaurants that serve Sushi are even customizing it as per Indian tastes. And this customization can be seen with restaurants offering vegetarian sushi.

With Sushi eating gaining ground in India it is not far that more and more restaurants will provide it and it will become a popular choice, just as it is in the West.
