Mehbooba said in spite of having been represented in the Assembly by most powerful politicians of NC, the Ganderbal area had remained one of the most backward in the state.

EMPHASISING THE historical role played by Ganderbal in introducing a sense of accountability into electoral process of the state,Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti today said the development initiatives started after 2002 elections had been virtually reversed.

Addressing a meeting of the office bearers and prominent workers of Ganderbal here, which was among others addressed party General Secretary Mohammed Dilawar Mir, Senior Leader Qazi Mohammed Afzal, Bashir Ahmed Mir, and Ab Wahid Dar. Mehbooba Mufti regretted that the present government had completely failed in building on the achievements of previous coalition. “This is in line with the traditional thinking of the NC to keep people engaged in non issues while trying to run the government with an iron fist, draconian laws and hollow slogans”, she said.

Mehbooba said in spite of having been represented in the Assembly by most powerful politicians of NC, the Ganderbal area had remained one of the most backward in the state. But the PDP led government had changed this scenario in just three years with the launching and execution of projects for all round development.

She said the revolutionary vote that the people of Ganderbal had exercised in 2002 by refusing to be treated as dumb driven personal fiefdom of NC had paid historic dividends both for the area and the state. This had changed Kashmir politics significantly which led to revival of peace and dignity. It led to overall development of the state and an end to repression, catch and kill policy Pakistan bashing and opening of routes across LOC. Nothing would have been possible without the display of courage and wisdom by Ganderbal electorate, she reiterated.

Recounting the progress the area made since 2002, Mehbooba said apart from establishing the supremacy of the people over their elected leaders, the area witnessed establishment of two Tourism Development Authorities which could generate significant economic activity. The establishment of a district and Manasbal and Sonmarg Development authorities was a well deserved acknowledgement of the beauty and tourism potential of the area.
