Ganga Sagar Mela in West Bengal : A dip for Moksha
The pious Makar Sankranti dip at Ganga Sagar, which is the second largest after the Kumbh Mela kick-started on 10 January 2014 and will end on 16 January 2014 at Sagar Island. Every year on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti, thousands of people gather and take a holy dip at the confluence of river Ganga and Bay of Bengal after which they offer puja in the Kapil Muni temple.

This is an annual event and is held at the Sagar Island's southern tip in the Ganges delta atop the Bay of Bengal. This year the festival is expected to witness a huge rush, because of the absence of the Kumbh Mela, and the estimate is around 8 lakhs plus pilgrims, for which proper arrangements have been made. The timings for the holy dip is at 07:04 pm later today. The dip timings have coincided with the transition of the Sun into Makara Rashi on its celestial path.

Three lakh devotees are already said to be present at the Sagar Island to take the holy dip from different parts of the country. This time a ham radio club based in North 24 Parganas will broadcast the mela all over the world through ham radio technology. The National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR) is helping the club on this work, by providing them the required equipment.

The priest at the Kapil Muni tempel chant, 'sab teerth baar baar, Ganga Sagar ek bar', which means you can go to all the holy places, but a pilgrimage to Ganga Sagar equals them all. A dip here means a redemption of all the ills, we have done.
