Gangs of Wasseypur kicks up debate among critics
After a long time, a film has been released with not just box-office returns in mind. However, did it fare well with the critics? Was the adventure and courage of conviction while making Gangs of Wasseypur worth it? It's a tough call for a tough film.

THE GANGS of Wasseypur was not banking on the entertainment-loving audience or to reach the goal of 100 crores but it was aiming for the much sought-after critical acclaim. After the screening in Cannes, Anurag Kashyup would have been hoping to woo Indian critics but everything did not go according to the plot as critics are divided over their opinion about the film. The major disagreement is about the fact that after the first slow half and hour, did the movie recover? Some said it did, and some said it did not. But both the sides agreed that the Gangs of Wasseypur did not have a good start.

The story revolves around two friends and their criminal background. How they go about life committing crimes and the true representation of a yesteryear Bihar with the correct accent and the style might have impressed many in the French Riveria but may not be that enticing to the public in India. The plot of the movie is fairly good as all Anurag Kashyup movie - with a bit of intrigue, suspense, drama and lust. However, the one thing noticeable in the movie is the incessant movement of Rajiv Ravi's camera that in a way lends energy to the movie.

All the characters are cleverly written to be etched in the memory of the people and Manoj Bajpayee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are extraordinary as per critics. With witty dialogues, and one-liners, the film spells dark humour that is seen almost in every character. People, who are not used to the lingo of Uttar Pradesh or Bihar would find it disturbing the way people talk in the film. Almost like the Indian Godfather, the film has revenge, lies, treachery and misunderstanding. All in all, a very strong film and very strong characterization. Many would say that Anurag Kashyup was extremely brave to make a movie that would disturb, confuse and also start a debate among critics.
