The law was backed by Centre-left government of President Cristina Kirchner. It was adopted in a 32-27 vote after 15 hours of debate.
“Argentine society has changed and the bill was aimed at guaranteeing the rights of minorities,” said opposition Radical senator Gerardo Morales.“It is a historic day,” said the ruling party leader Migrel Pichetto.
People cheered outside the Congress when the bill was passed and some even chanted ‘equality, equality’.
