A FEW months ago Mexico City's legislature passed the first law giving same gender marriages the same status as heterosexual ones and allowing such couples to adopt children. On Thursday (March 11), some gay marriages and their legal certification took place without any hitch.
Though the gay marriage law applies for Mexico City but seemingly will be recognised in the rest of the country.
While officiating and certifying the gay marriages, Judge Hegel Cortes said, “Today is a historic day in Mexico City. With the signing of these marriage certificates, we leave behind the traditional idea of a family and we allow for two people, regardless of sexual orientation, to get married."
