Geek Pride Day: Better honour the emergent inheritors of the Earth!
Geek Pride Day (GPD), the observance that originated in Spain in 2006, is meant to celebrate and promote geek culture on May 25.

Thanks to the internet that the observance has spread around many cities of the world and geeks get together on GPD to express pride in geekiness and adhere to their basic rights and responsibilities.

In a few Western cities, many bloggers, programmers, nerds, geeks and technology enthusiasts get together to share their experiences and take pride in their pursuits. At some places the Geek Pride parades are held to commemorate the day.

The date for GPD has been chosen to coincide with the first 'Star Wars' film which was released on May 25, 1977. However, the observance of GPD has picked up since 2006 for a worldwide celebration of nerdom through meet-ups on everything worth geeking about.

To ordinary people, a geek is a bit funny or socially inept person doing something uncanny. They are also called square pegs in round holes but now the attitude about geeks is changing.

According to Simon Pegg, being a geek is extremely liberating. However, in many cultures and families, geeks are seen as crazy individuals and not liked. But, geeks now take pride in their individuality as expressed by James Marsters, "In Europe they call geeks 'smart people,' and frankly I think we live in a culture that doesn't value intelligence enough; so I am very proud in saying that I am a geek."

Noted author Mark Roeder, in his book "Unnatural Selection: Why the Geeks Will Inherit the Earth", writes that the rise of the geek represents a new phase of human evolution.

To me, a geek is a person who is passionate and crazy about a thing – computer, technology, hobby, novelty or any other thing that fancies him or her. He or she is an interesting person with an eccentric devotion to a particular interest and it would be better to call him or her a 'nerd'.

So, respect and honour geeks since they add to diversity of human race and contribute to the society selflessly! HAPPY GEEKS PRIDE DAY!
