Geek Pride Day on May 25: Geeks are not eccentric; they're nerds who live their dreams
Over the years, the observance of the Geek Pride Day (GPD) on May 25 has caught up in metro towns of India and netizens celebrate the day with great enthusiasm. The day is celebrated on the anniversary date of the first Star Wars film release in 1977 on May 25.

The idea of GPD took shape in Spain in 2006 to promote geek culture. Now, it is widely celebrated worldwide and observance is spreading every year through social media. On this day, a large number of bloggers launch of the Geek Pride Day websites to exchange views and respect geeks.

Noted author Mark Roeder, in his book, "Unnatural Selection: Why the Geeks Will Inherit the Earth", writes that the rise of the geek represents a new phase of human evolution.

I find geeks highly intelligent people who follow a pursuit with utmost craze and gusto without bothering about what others think of them. Though geeks are seen as eccentrics and mocked by the mainstream society, but due to their contribution to technologies and intellectual pursuits, they have gained respect and have started taking pride in their geekiness. To me, geeks are not eccentric; they're nerds who live their dreams.

Slowly, a more respectable word 'nerd' is being for a geek now since such a person lives in dream world to invent unusual things for the sake of creation and not for recognition, fame or money. A geek lives his or her pursuit since he or she finds it worthwhile.

Often, geeks are highly intelligent and creative people who get highly turned inward and immersed in their pursuits that other people start calling them crazy. They also specialize as science geeks, math geeks, computer geeks, gaming geeks, craft geeks, technology geeks, etc.

These days, the technology oriented geeks exert a powerful influence over the global economy and society.

So, better respect and honour geeks since they add to diversity of human race and contribute to the society selflessly!

Wishing all a happy Geeks Pride Day!
