Gender Responsive Pedagogy: A Teacher's Handbook - Book Review
The book "Gender Responsive Pedagogy: A Teacher's Handbook" advocates for classroom practices, which are gender inclusive by respecting the diversity of learning and accommodating their learning styles.
Authored by Penina Mlama, Marema Dioum, Herbert Makoye, Lornah Murage, Margaret Wagah, Rose Washika for Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), the book is stated to be designed to be a practical guide for making teaching and learning processes gender responsive.

A soft copy of the book was given to me during a conference in Malaysia, which is also available on the net for download, is written to sensitise teacher and become 'aware of situations that are discriminatory on the basis of gender' and avoid the use of 'learning materials that depict only one gender performing certain types of activities or they may make disparaging remarks about the capability or characteristics of either gender'.

The book produced by the FAWE - a pan-African non-government organisation - is available both in English and French advices teachers to create the learning activities akin to the examples given in book so that both boys and girls participate in education in school and do well in their studies.

According the authors of the book, teachers are central to the teaching and learning processes, their understanding and awareness of gender responsiveness is key to the effective participation of the girls and boys in learning processes. And, the book that gets used in many in-service teacher training is mean to understood and translated into action.

The book explains the concept of gender and associated terminology so that teachers become articulate 'gender responsive teacher who understand and respond to the specific needs of girls and boys in the teaching and learning processes leading to their equal participation in the pedagogically sound leaning process and equal access to learning materials.'

Not only, the book is useful for practicing teachers but also for teacher educators, trainers, educational planners and managers. Since, the book can be down-loaded from the net, it can be work as valuable material both for schools, institutes of women studies, educators and researchers in the area of pedagogy.
