George Steinbrenner, owner of New York Yankees baseball team died at the age of 80. Geroge Steinbrenner died after suffering a heart attack. George Steinbrenner was known as The Boss among the baseball community and was taken to hospital in Tampa, Florida, after falling ill overnight. Geroge was the son of a shipping merchant and hought the Yankees franchise in 1973 for $10m.
During his tenure, the Yankees won 11 pennants and 7 world series titles. Steinbrenner became the first owner to sell television rights to a cable company. Steinbrenner spent a lot to get the best players in New York Yankees and even had differences with a number of general managers and managers, which included Billy Martin, who he had hired and fired 5 times.
With Geroge Steinbrenner's health deteriorating in recent years, he was less involved in the business and his sons Hal and Hank took control over NY Yankees in the year 2007. He was seen at the final game at the old Yankee Stadium in 2008 and made an appearance at a game at the team's $1bn new home in April 2010.
