Republican Senator from Ohio George Voinovich denied that he had met President Barack Obama at the White House to change his vote on the health care reform. He said that they had just talked about the National Debt.
WHILE THE Republican Senator from Ohio George Voinovich did meet President Barack Obama at the White House for a discussion about the National debt, he catagorically told reporters that he would not change his stance on the health care reform. There were many rumours about the meeting, including one which said that George Voinovich would change his vote.
He told reporters, “That’s out of the question -- I am not a vote for the health care bill, period.”
Instead George Voinovich said he has discussed an idea for a bipartisan commission, that would focus on bringing down the national debt and increasing revenue. The Ohio senator believed that President Barack Obama was interested in the idea but was concerned about whether there would be any support for it.
“That’s the dilemma the president has -- he’d like to do the commission but the concern he has is he won’t have the support that’s necessary to get the commission done in the Congress. And if he doesn’t get some kind of consensus on a commission than he’s going to have to move forward to do something as an alternative to address the problem that I believe would not be as successful as if we could do it on a bipartisan basis.”
The rumours arose because the moderate Republican senator is not seeking re-election. He told reporters that the issue did not even come up because the President knew that he had taken a firm stand on it.
George Voinovich believes that the country cannot afford the Health care reform. “We can’t afford what we are doing now. How can we afford to do more?”
