Cricket-players were auctioned off for mini fortunes again. Yet another round of entertainment-cricket is to be organized by Indian Premier League (IPL). In a developing economy like ours can such money not be better employed?
CRICKET-PLAYERS were auctioned for crores of rupees to play yet another round of entertainment-cricket organized by Indian Premier League (IPL). IPL is set to mint enormous amounts of money from the forthcoming IPL matches. Already the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) is the richest member of the International Cricket League (ICL).
But all this money is national money generated out of public-craze for cricket, and this money should be used for public-welfare schemes rather than distributing it like freebies to cricketers for their instant show in selected matches/tournaments. Our cricketers are otherwise also earning huge money through advertisements apart from normal match-fees. Accumulation of wealth in a selected category like that of cricketers is not proper in a country where farmers are committing suicides for want of money. BCCI and IPL should be made autonomous public-sector companies accountable to Comptroller & Auditor General of India, and answerable as public-authority under the Right-To-Information Act.
