Ghajini catapults Asin into the big league
With the Aamir Khan-starer Ghajini, Asin appears to have hit the pot of Bollywood gold. With her attractive looks and considerable histrionic skills, she could be the next southern siren to conquer Bollywood after SriDevi, Hema Malini and Rekha.
IF SOMEONE has really gained from Ghajini (Hindi), it has to be the heroine of the movie – Asin Thottumkal – who has not only essayed the role she played in the Tamil original, but also hit the pot of Bollywood gold with the remake.
Asin is reportedly moving base to Mumbai as she has quite a few Bollywood projects in hand, with the next being London Dreams with Salman Khan. Her parents too are giving up their jobs to be with their daughter and lend her a helping hand, as her career is moving northward, both literally and figuratively.
A beaming Asin told the media, “I’ve been travelling non-stop. I had no time to look around and find a place. But now we’re finalising a place in Bandra. Hopefully, by new year I’ll lock in to the place. Right now we feel a little unsettled. In Mumbai, you desperately need your own home."
Asin, who made her debut in the Malayalam movie Narendra Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001, hit the bull’s eye with her second movie Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi in Telugu, for which she even won a Filmfare award for Best Actress (Telugu).
Since then, there has been no looking back for Asin, as she became a much sought after heroine in both Tollywood and Kollywood. Her ravishing looks and considerable dancing and histrionic skills not only won her accolades, but also fetched her success at the box-office. Soon one after another hits followed, which included films like Lakshmi Narasimha (Telugu, 2004), Gharshana (Telugu, 2004), M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi (Tamil, 2004), Ullam Ketkumei (Tamil, 2004), Ghajini (Tamil, 2005 – Filmfare award for Best Actress), Sivakasi (Tamil, 2006), Pokkiri (Tamil, 2007) and Dasavathaaram (Tamil, 2008).
With the Hindi version of
Ghajini confirming her credentials, Asin is going great guns to achieve what quite a few leading ladies of Tamil and Telugu film worlds as well as beauties of South Indian origin have always done: that is, conquer Bollywood.
The fact that Asin is well-versed in Hindi and does not need another person to dub for her is also seen as one of her advantages.
If everything goes according to the script, Asin could be the next in the line of the illustrious Southern belles who had the Bollywood eating out of the palms of their elegant hands, such as Vyjayantimala (Tamil), Hema Malini (Tamil), Rekha (Tamil), Jayaprada (Telugu) and Sridevi (Tamil).
