Ghazab Prem Ki Ajab Kahani

Rajkumar Santoshi was hailed as one of the most-promising directors in the 90's. A couple of inane films that followed, however, didn't do any wonders to his career. Will Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani be any different.

I RATE Ghayal, Andaz Apna Apna and Khakee as Raj Kumar Santoshi’s best works. In fact, I feel Khakee is one of the most under-rated films of Indian cinema.

It is good to see that Raj Kumar Santoshi is back to form with Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Though, he is marred by a done-to-death storyline, his execution lifts the film to an entertaining level.

Everyone knows that comedies are the toughest to make; Raj Kumar Santoshi succeeds as a director, for he makes you laugh even with the age-old gags,in fact he fuses new life in them!

The film tells the story of Prem [Ranbir Kapoor]. A happy-go-lucky guy, he also happens to be the president of Happy Club. A case of mistaken identity introduces him to Jenny [Katrina Kaif]. It is love at first sight for Prem. However, very soon he finds out to his utter dismay that Jenny is in love with Rahul Jalan [Upen Patel], son of a wily politician [Govind Namdeo].

How Prem gets Jenny forms the narrative of the film.

The first-half is crackling and breezy; however, problems crop-up in the second half, though after 15 minutes or so they are ironed out and the film is back on track. The production-design is very rich; particularly a couple of locations used to film songs.

What rocks the movie:

Ranbir Kapoor. Simply first-rate and effortlessly comic.

The sizzling chemistry between Ranbir-Katrina is to be seen to be believed. Next hit pair.

Many sequences, particularly the one where Prem outsmarts Tony. In the same sequence, when Ranbir interacts with Katrina, dancing.

What chucks the movie:

The fact that there is no story.

The music could have been better.

Verdict:

Watch AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI if only for the Ghazab performance of Prem err… Ranbir Kapoor.
