The vote counting began on 8 AM today and would continue till two in the afternoon. According to the State Election Commission (SEC), 34 observers will be posted at the 24 counting centres to monitor the process. “One observor will be stationed at each counting centre, instead of communting between the counting centres as was planned earlier”, B Venkateshwara Rao, secretary to SEC, said.
The main contenders for these polls, have been predicted to be the Congress party and the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), though Telegu Desam Party (TDP), Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) are also in the fray. An alliance is expected between the MIM and the Congress, to smoothly elect the mayor and deputy mayor, depending on their fortunes today.
Till now, as per reports the Congress has bagged 17 seats and is leading in 11, while the MIM has 15 seats is ahead in four. The TDP had 10 seats and led in four. The Bharatiya Janata Party has gotten only one till now and is leading in another. The PRP and Lok Satta floated by former bureaucrat Jayaprakash Narayan have till now had nil scores.
The election results come in circumstances that have changed drastically from the April general elections. With the demise of YS Rajashekhjara Reddy, it would be a telling time for the Congress, on whether people still accept them with the same fervour.
Apart from this, these results coincide on the first anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, prompting the fortification of the city. With pickets set up at various points across Hyderabad, vehicles are being stopped and checked, while the police keeps an active vigil at all counting centres.
