Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda won a silver medal in the Men's High Jump F42 event with a jump of 1.74m. It is a huge achievement for the athlete from Karnataka, thus becoming the eighth Paralympic athlete to win a medal from India.
It is a huge achievement for the athlete, as he is the eighth Paralympic athlete from India to win a medal, which makes it even more special. This was India's first medal during the ongoing Games, which started in 29 August and ends on 9 September 2012. India has sent a 10-member contingent for the Paralympic Games in 4 different sports.
Participating in such a sport is not an easy job, especially if you have some physical problems. Girisha Hosanagara has an impairment in his left leg. No one would be able to understand the effort and training that these athletes undergo, which may sometimes be painful. Though, with able legs, India did not win any Olympic medal in the London Summer
Olympic Games, but Girisha showed that with proper training and dedication, nothing is impossible.
It was very unfortunate for the Indian to miss out on a Gold medal, as the Fiji athlete, Iliesa Delana who won the gold medal jumped a height of 1.74m, similar to that of the Indian and the Polish athlete, Lukasz Mamczarz. But, Delana achieved this feat in less jumps, reported PTI. Hence, it was the Fiji athlete who won the gold medal. India hopes to win some more medals in the coming days. Will the Indian Paralympic team come up with their best Paralympic Games, as was done by the Indian Olympic athletes during the 2012 London Games? India's best paralympic performance has been in 1984 Games with two silver and bronze medals to her name.
