Disturbing news has come from Haryana's Motilal Nehru School of Sports (MNSS) at Rai in Sonepat, as informed by a Facebook friend; a girl studying in class XI has reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the fan in her hostel room.

The MNSS is a well-resourced prestigious co-educational residential school of Haryana government wherein education is subsedised and affordable to rural students.

It has been reported that Ashu, in her late teens, who hailed from of Matindu village in Sonepat district reportedly committed suicide during the evening hours. She was a Class XI student living in the girls' hostel which has a number of support staff along with house mistresses who are suppose to provide psycho-social bearing and counselling to girls for their wellbeing.

The school functionaries took the body the girl to the civil hospital in Sonepat and she was declared brought dead. Meanwhile a team of police personnel reached the hospital and the body was sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.

According to the father of the girl, of late, Ashu had been worried because of her poor performance in mathematics, it is told.

Very recently, a spate of incidents of rapes, accidental deaths, fatal physical assaults on students and suicides by young students has been reported in all hues of schools including the prestigious ones.

Both parents and sociologists feel that there should be a proper system for students' physical safety, psychological wellbeing, and academic support to and schools need to be made accountable for these basic provisions. In schools, which admit schools after an entrance or screening test, if children are pushed towards fear, anxiety and worry by hurting the self-esteem for poor performance, it should be treated as poor quality of teaching and school management.

"The schools must hang their heads in shame if the children's safety gets compromised due to mis-management and academically unprofessional work or classroom practices," said an educator after hearing the news.
