Girl wants real gold; files a police complaint against father
10 months after discovering that she has been conned, a Kerala woman has filed a case against her father for gifting her rolled gold. She wouldn't let go of the matter until her father replaces the 22 sovereigns of 'fake gold' with real gold.

BRIDES ARE often abused in India if their fathers fail to give them enough gold, money or a car in dowry. But in a bizzare case, bride herself went to file a police complaint against her father for gifting her rolled gold and not real gold.

With the price of gold skyrocketing, it was understandable why the bride's father made the choice of gifting her daughter rolled gold. The daughter, however, was not fine with his choice of gold.

19-year-old Fathima Hussain Haji was incensed when after 10 months of marriage she found that her father had conned her. Unable to contain her seething anger in spite of her husband asking her to let go of the matter, Fathima approached the Perinthalmanna police station in Malappuram district to file a complaint against her father E P Hussain. Apparently, her father is a Gulf businessman and quite rich.

In southern India, it is a custom to gift heavy gold jewelery to daughters at their marriage. According to some, the jewelery of the bride is so heavy that they are sewn to the bride's clothes for her D day. However, such was not the case with Fatima, as she alleged that the 30 gold sovereigns given to her by father were fake and 22 of them were rolled gold.

The police did not register a case. “We received a complaint from Fathima and called her father to the police station. As it was a matrimonial and civil dispute, we didn't register a case," a police official was quoted by The Times of India.

Meanwhile, the local Muslim religious members got involved and said that they would try to resolve the matter. Hussain, on the other hand has approached the Kerala High Court complaining harassment by Perinthalmanna police in the matter. Fathima wants her father to replace all the 22 pieces of rolled gold with pure gold and then only she will let the matter go.
