GNLU Gandhinagar appoints a new director
Bimal N Patel, a distinguished academician, has been appointed as the new director of the Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar. Patel has 15 years experience in progressively academic leadership and scholarly research in international law.
THE GENERAL Council headed by the Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan has appointed Bimal N Patel, a distinguished academician and scholar in international law and diplomacy and administration, as the new director of the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar.

The General Council, which consists, among others, the Attorney-General for India, Solicitor General of India, and the chairman of University Grant Commission and Bar Council of India unanimously resolved to appoint Patel during the council meeting held at the Supreme Court premises on October 22.

The council also includes the chief justice of Gujarat, judges of the Supreme Court and Gujarat high court, law minister, education minister and finance minister of Gujarat, chairman of Bar Council of Gujarat and advocate-general of Gujarat.

Ishan V Vyas of public relations cell Informed that Patel brings to the university a 15 years combined experience of progressively academic leadership and scholarly research experience in international law, international relations, international organisations and academic/professional institutions.

He has published four books and many articles/papers in leading international law journals. Patel, a visiting professor/scholar, has taught supervised research activities and projects in various universities in Asia, Pacific and Europe.

He has provided leadership in strategic planning of policy-oriented pioneering academic research projects. He has successfully developed and implemented foreign exchange of students and faculty projects and organised high-profile national and international seminars/workshops of national and international importance.

He has contributed to the administrative, procedural and substantive jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and International Labour Organisation Administrative Tribunal (Geneva).

Patel has extensive international administrative knowledge and experience of serving the United Nations. He also has experience in designing and implementing international and national programmes and projects and networking and coordination with governmental agencies, UN bodies and academic/research institutions in various parts of the world.

Patel is holds the membership of some of the world’s most reputed international law associations, such as the American Society of International Law, Indian Society of International Law, International Law Association, etc, and is serving various international legal research committees. An eminent scholar of the GNLU, he has made significant contribution to the GNLU’s outreach, literature resources and exchange activities among others.

He has played a prime mover role and successfully advocated the establishment of regional facility of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the oldest arbitration court in the world, in the New Delhi and India’s membership in the Hague Conference on private international law with an aim to make New Delhi a capital of law in Asia. He is committed to promote the use of teaching, education and research of international law and prepare lawyers who can appear before the international courts and tribunals.

Recognising India’s emerging role in the world affairs and importance of international law to ensure the momentum, he would like to promote that practitioners and students of national laws of India acquire good understanding of the latest development in international law in their respective areas of profession- promotion of importance of international law in national judicial system, legal profession and education.
