THE GROUP of Ministers' (GoM) on Bhopal tragedy met again today on the second consecutive day to discuss various legal options that were available to the government to bring the Bhopal gas case to its conclusion.
Home Minister P Chidambaram said that all pending legal issues were discussed along with the future course of action in wake of the decision given by the trial court. It is mentionable that a Bhopal Court has convicted seven accused merely for negligence in the Bhopal gas case under various sections of Indian law. The Group of Ministers' also reached some conclusions about the future course of action to be taken. These tentative conclusions are to be submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday.
The Group of Ministers' on Bhopal gas tragedy was constituted after there was a public outrage across the country over the decision of the Bhopal trial court. The manner in which Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson escaped the long arm of law also lead to accusations that the government and people in the establishment themselves had helped the culprits, a charge denied by government. After being constituted by the Prime Minister, the GoM started its proceedings on Friday. Among the important steps it is considering to alleviate the sufferings of gas victims is to offer a new compensation package as well as devise ways to bring the culprits to book.
