YS Rajashekhara Reddy, died in an unfortunate chopper accident. While the Congress party mourns the loss of a leader who never lost an election, the people of Andhra have lost their symbol of good governance, one who delivered on electoral promises.
THE DEATH of YS Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR), the most powerful Congress satrap in the country has sent shock waves in the entire nation as well as for the people of Andhra Pradesh, for whom YSR was a symbol of good governance, one who delivered on electoral promises.
However, his tragic death is in particular a great loss and setback to the Congress party, which went into a state of mourning after losing Reddy in an unfortunate chopper crash. He was a confident leader, who while working for the party and the people, brooked no opposition to his authority.
Popularly known as YSR, the late chief minister was known to use all the tricks in the trade to humble his political opponents but also worked hard for the welfare of the masses. For a long time, he had to wait in the shadows as PV Narsimha Rao, the former Indian Prime Minister, who also hailed from the same state and ensured that Reddy did not rise enough to pose him a challenge.
Reddy was considered the most powerful regional leader of the party in present times and it it is not without any reasons. He retained power in the May 2009 elections and also delivered a huge number of MPs in the general elections making him almost a cult hero for the Congress high command.
YSR assumed the political mantle from his father, Raja Reddy, a Rayalseema strongman, who was murdered in the nineties. He won the state elections from Kadapa in 1978 and thereafter never lost an election in his long political career.
Under his leadership, the Andhra Pradesh government launched welfare schemes, which helped the poor in a great way. He introduced pension schemes for the elderly, implemented the rural employment schemes in letter and spirit, along with keeping the economy and industry growing, which ultimately brought him back to power.
