Google celebrates 131st birthday of world's early female engineer Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu
Internet search engine giant celebrates with a sketch doodle the 131st birthday of Romanian female engineer Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu considered to be one of the world's first female engineers.

Zamfirescu (1887-1973), was one of the world's first female engineers, despite all the prejudice, bias and odds rose to be a great engineer in a male-dominated field. She headed various geology laboratories and research projects in the area mineral resources of her country.

She was born at Galai in Romania on 10 November 1887. Her father, Atanase Leonida, was a career officer and her brother was engineer Dimitrie Leonida.

She studied at the Royal Academy of Technology, Berlin and graduated in 1912 in mechanical engineering. She became the first female member of the General Association of Romanian Engineers (AGIR) and ran laboratories for the Geological Institute of Romania.

She suffered gender-related discrimination, but her devotion and contribution led to carving out name and fame in the field of engineering. Her four-decade career as an engineer and researcher continues to inspire females in the area of STEM subject areas.
