Google celebrates doctor Anandi Gopalrao Joshi's 153rd birthday with sketch doodle
Internet search engine giant celebrates doctor Anandi Gopalrao Joshi's 153rd birthday with sketch doodle who was the first Indian woman to pursue a MD degree in Western medicine in 1886. She obtained the degree against all the odds but her life was short-lived.

The sketch doodle in green showing Joshi in the foreground is meant to honour her and inspire female education and gender equity.

She was a child bride who bore her child at the age of 14 and her child could survive only 10 days due to the utter lack of medical care in her locality. She decided to study medicine in the USA.

She was admitted for her medical course at the age of 19 and graduated with an MD degree on 11 March, 1886. The topic of her thesis was "Obstetrics among the Aryan Hindus". Her success in studies was hailed in India and even Queen Victoria congratulated her on her graduation from a foreign land.

She chose to return to India in late 1886 and joined as the physician-in-charge of the female ward of Albert Edward Hospital in then princely state of Kolhapur.

Unfortunately, her professional life was cut short as she died on 26 February, 1887 before turning 22. Her death was mourned throughout India.
