Google celebrates glass chemist Marga Faulstich's 103rd birthday with an animated sketch doodle
The internet search engine and technology giant Google celebrates German glass chemist Marga Faulstich's 103rd birthday on June 16 with an animated sketch doodle.

She is credited with creation of over 300 kinds of eyeglass lenses and holds about 40 patents. She worked at Schott Glass Company for four decades to rise to the position of an executive which was a male bastion earlier.

On the home page of Google, the doodle shows Faulstich's sketch surrounded by glass lenses with her trying two of them on herself.

According to Google blog, the doodle also depicts early concepts of the doodle by the artist, Sophia Martineck surrounded by glasses, beakers in which the chemist is shown surrounded by other lab equipments. Another hand-sketched doodle shows her in a chemistry lab set-up trying on lenses.

Faulstich, born in Weimar in 1915, received international recognition for the invention of the lightweight lens for which she was honoured in 1973.

Faulstich retired in 1979 after four decades of professional work but continued her contributions by way of presentations at conferences, keynote addresses and lectures. She died on February 1, 1998 at age 82.
