Google celebrates mathematician Leibniz's 372nd birthday with black and white sketch doodle
The internet search engine and technology giant Google celebrates German philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's 372nd birthday with black and white sketch doodle on its home page today. He is credited for developing differential and integral calculus and his notations are the mainstay in mathematics.

Though Isaac Newton also did similar work but their work is regarded independent of each other. Moreover, Leibniz is credited for giving the modern formula for pi. He also invented mechanical calculators and arithmometer in 1680s.

He was born on July 1, 1646 at Leipzig in Germany. The collection of his manuscripts has been inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. He died at the age of 70 on 14th November 1716.

Besides his work in maths and physics he also worked in the fields of philosophy, politics, law, ethics, theology, history, and philology and made noteworthy contributions.

Here are his some famous quotes.

-Music is the pleasure the human mind experiences from counting without being aware that it is counting.

-There are also two kinds of truths: truth of reasoning and truths of fact. Truths of reasoning are necessary and their opposite is impossible; those of fact are contingent and their opposite is possible.

-When a truth is necessary, the reason for it can be found by analysis, that is, by resolving it into simpler ideas and truths until the primary ones are reached.

-I do not conceive of any reality at all as without genuine unity.
