GOOGLE HAS announced that it has stopped selling its first ‘superphone’ from its web store. The search giant announced it on its site that the iconic Nexus One, which was launched in January this year.
“Sorry, folks...The Nexus One is no longer available for purchase directly from Google,” the company announced on its site.
Google was selling the phone; Nexus One designed by HTC, via its web store, a new retailing venture which ultimately was a failure. Google went on to acknowledge this fact.
“While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not,” wrote Andy Rubin, vice-president of engineering at Google in a blog post in May. “It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters.”
It doesn’t come as a surprise because Google had earlier warned its users that the company would shut down the store. But the ‘registered developers’ will get the device as Google promised to make the device available through a partner.
The company didn’t divulge any information on how many units of Nexus One it has sold. Nexus One was launched as a competitor of Apple’s iPhone but it couldn’t survive the battle.
