EVER WONDERED what Google stores in the settings of the various Google product accounts used by us? How much of this content is private and what is actually shared? Want to change some of the settings for better security and safety?
A large number of netizens use Google products, either for searching the web and Gmail or for using all Google services like Gmail, News Alerts, Google Docs, Picasa, YouTube, Google sites, Orkut, Blogger and the like. What a large majority of them do not know is that, when they started using these services (sign up), each of these services or products keep a record of the data entered by the user and their choice of settings. Some of it is stored privately while, some of it can be easily accessed publicly.
Google Dashboard, launched early this November, provides an elegant answer. In order to use this device, just log into any Google product, like Gmail. Then, in the URL window, type google.com/dashboard. A page opens up, showing all products used by that person, along with links to control the data entered and shared or kept private by them. For example: In case of a Gmail account, it gives statistics about the contents of the inbox and other folders, apart from chat history and even trashed mails.
There are similar pages for each of the Google products. For example in the Google Profile page, only certain data is in public view. The user is in complete control over what they wish to share and can change their specifications as per their desire. Security, safety and privacy issues can be handled better, thanks to Google Dashboard.
