THE GOOGLE deal with social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace which was in the conceptual stage since last December finally came into effect for providing real time information. This collaboration means when a person searches for a particular topic on Google, he will be also be be served information from various social media platforms apart from the usual search results.
This move from the internet giant was to bring its services at par with Microsoft Corp's Bing that enable the internet surfers to track minute by minute updates, comments and posts. The real time search option which will be accessible through a tool called “Updates” can also be fruitful for companies, who wish to monitor public opinions on their products or services.Google's real time search engine tracks up to the last minute status updates apart from maintaining the continuity in its main search results.
For having the updates delivered to the user, without having the need to be content specific or pro-active, the updates via Google can be accessed through 'Google Alerts', by clicking on 'Updates' from the 'Type' drop-down menu. Depending upon the need or usage up to 50 results can be accessed once per day, once in a week or as it happens. Although the service does not provide information based on the geographical location, the best results can be seen if the user adds the name of the area for a more refined search.Upon releasing the service, Google's product manager, Dylan Casey wrote on his blog, “ On the new homepage you’ll find some great tools to help you refine and understand your results. First, you can use geographic refinements to find updates and news near you, or in a region you specify. So if you’re traveling to Los Angeles this summer, you can check out tweets from Angelenos to get ideas for activities happening right where you are.”He further mentioned, “ In addition, we’ve added a conversations view, making it easy to follow a discussion on the real-time web. Often a single tweet sparks a larger conversation of re-tweets and other replies, but to put it together you have to click through a bunch of links and figure it out yourself”.
