Google honours noted Indian shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan on his 102th birth anniversary with a doodle
The internet search engine and technology giant has honoured famed Indian shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan with a doodle on his 102nd birthday.

On the homepage of Google, the doodle depicts Bharat Ratna Bismillah Khan playing the shehnai against the backdrop of geometrical shapes and its logo. The doodle has been illustrated by Chennai-based artist Vijay Krish.

On its blog, Google states, "Born in Bhirung Raut Ki Gali, Bihar to a family of court musicians, it is said that his grandfather exclaimed 'Bismillah!' upon seeing his grandson, and the name stuck."

The blog further adds, "Both India's declaration of independence from the ramparts of the Red Fort in 1947 and the creation of the Indian republic three years later in 1950 were heralded by Ustad Bismillah Khan's shehnai."

According the Google's blog, although Bismillah Khan had started playing in public at the age of 14, his talent was first recognised at the All India Music Conference at Kolkata in 1937 and later when he performed at the Edinburgh Music Festival, which won him international fame.

With his style of playing the instrument, he popularised the shehnai worldwide and earned it recognition as a form of Indian classical music. Every year, the Republic Day celebrations are aired to the opening notes of his shehnai music.
