Google honours obstetrical anesthetist Virginia Apgar with an animated doodle
The internet search engine and technology giant Google honors anesthetist Virginia Apgar with an animated doodle. Dr Virginia Apgar's innovative technique has saved very many lives.

The doodle marks Dr Apgar's 109th birth anniversary. She is remembered for the development of a test for the health of newborn babies that continues to be used even today across the world.

An acrostic of her name Apgar describes the testing points.

A: Appearance of the newborn a healthy color or bluish

P: Pulse that is above or below 100 beats per minute, or undetectable

G: Grimace - the response that baby makes on stimulation of her reflexes are

A: Activity of legs and arms movement

R: Respiration strength of baby's breathing

Through this acronym doctors and nurses remember the composition of of the test.

She was a staunch advocate ofr universal vaccination and early intervention for the prevention of birth defects.
