Google marks 136th birth anniversary of Hindi writer Munshi Premchand with a sketch doodle
It is 136th birth anniversary of the noted and most read Hindi author Munshi Premchand today. His literary works have been enthralling the native literature lovers' generation after generations.

The internet search engine giant Google is celebrating Premchand's birthday with a sketch doodle on its homepage with its logo converted into Devnagari script. The doodle depicts author's work influenced by the local culture and rural scenarios in his stories such as Godan, Bade Bhaisaab, Gaban, Poos Ki Raat and many more.

Premchand has authored more than a dozen novels and over 250 short stories which are rated as classics of the Hindi literature. He is regarded in Hindi literature as equivalent to Shakespeare of English literature.

Premchand (31 July 1880 - 8 October 1936) is famous for his modern Hindustani literature of pre-independence era. His real name was Dhanpat Rai Srivastav and he began writing under the pen name "Nawab Rai", but subsequently switched to the pen name "Premchand".

He wrote brilliant novels, stories and dramas. For his novels, he has been referred to as the "Upanyas Samrat" by some noted Hindi writers. His works have been translated into a number of foreign languages.
