Google marks 30 years of Pi mathematical symbol with a formula doodle
March 14 is the day, first recognised by physicist Larry Shaw in 1988, to honour the mathematical constant called pi. The day is marked by the internet giant Google with a doodle on its home page. This year the Pi-Day completes 30 years.

The doodle has been made with different parts of sweet pie in the form of a mathematical formula by making use of its logo letters.

The value of pi is 22/7 and today even school children use the value to calculate the circumference and area of a circle by substituting the value of pi in the formulas. Also the surface area and volume of a sphere make use of the value of pi in their formulas.

The day is observed by the scientific community in the West with a slice of sweet pie. Mathematicians classify pi as an irrational number whose decimal value extend to infinity, how ever for most calculation its approximate value as 3.14 is used. It was William Jones, a British mathematician, who first gave the Greek letter to represent it and its standard definition.

In the US, at San Francisco's Exploratorium pi-inspired activities are being held today. Also, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US is going to release its undergraduate admissions list today.

Further, space agency NASA has invited math whizzes to compete in its 'Pi in the Sky' challenge. The NASA competition consists of solving of some interplanetary mathematics problems.
