GOOGLE STAFFERS have suddenly got busier. On one hand they have the task of fixing the badly placed social networking product Buzz, while on the other, they have Wikipedia to save.
The stalwart firm Google is reportedly giving $2 million to the foundation that runs Wikipedia, making it the largest donation ever made to the popular Internet encyclopedia.
Google announced on Wednesday that it will grant the said amount of fortune to Wikimedia Foundation so that it can reach the $10.6 million revenue target for the fiscal year ending in June. Google made its grant six months after Wikimedia got a $2 million donation from the investment arm of EBay founder Pierre Omidyar. According to AP, Wikimedia has received donations from over 240,000 people so far this fiscal year, in small amounts from Wikipedia's users and unpaid contributors. Wikipedia is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. The term wikipedia actually come from two different words—wiki meaning quick in Hawaiian language, and pedia meaning encyclopedia.
