Goonj: A voice and an effort
Goonj, a unique resource mobilisation initiative providing clothes and other basic amenities to millions. How the power of reuse can bring the change in lives of millions is answered by Goonj, using cities' excess into fulfilling the needs of many.
IT IS generally said that the basic need of man is roti, kapda aur makan (food, clothing and lodging). Cloth is the basic need of a man not only to hide the body but also for its protection from chilling cold and maintaining hygiene. Unfortunately in India, the news of people dying of cold because of unavailability of proper clothing is not uncommon. Many of us may have ignored the voice of those living in abject poverty but some people could not and they together made an echo- Goonj.

Goonj, an non-government organisation led by Anshu Gupta believes in vastra samman (respect for clothes). It believes that it is of outmost importance to maintain the dignity of taker in mind than to accumulate pride in ourself. The unused clothes but still usable are collected at various centres across the country and then later altered to make them better for the receiver and are distributed to the people who are in need of them. There have been many cases that poor women have been dying of cervical cancer because of inability to maintain hygiene during their cycles due to improper clothing. One of the major initiative of this organisation in such cases is to make the sanitary napkins from the waste cloths. School material like used schoolbags, books, stationary can also be circulated for the needy ones through it.

Goonj provides everyone the opportunity to contribute in various forms. At first one can contribute the used clean clothes, schools bags, stationery, toys etc. Further one can organise small camps in their locality to collect the material and transport them to one of the 25 cities listed on Goonj website. One can also join Goonj as a volunteer. One can donate money as monetary help improves the mobility of any organisation.

A nation wide campaign is soon to take off in which one can provide efforts and see the impact of it. This camp will take place from September 27 to October 3, 2009. This week will provide a chance to bring changes in the  lives of millions. Let’s not be a thinker only this time but a doer.
