Gopal Goyal Kanda is the prime accused of the Geetika suicide case. He was the rising star in Haryana politics and was unstoppable, until a suicide note naming him by the Delhi police as the reason for the suicide, nailed him.
GOPAL GOYAL Kanda, an independent MLA, is basically from Sirsa, a small village in Haryana. Kanda's origin was very humble, his ancestors used to weigh vegetables at a wholesale market in Sirsa, the surname 'Kanda' was because of this trade, which meant 'iron weights' in the local language. His father, Murali Dhar used to practice law at the Sirsa district court.
Gopal Goyal Kanda was the eldest kid of Mulrli Dhar and he has three brothers and a sister. He was a school dropout and did some odd jobs and with his savings, Kanda started a footwear store in Sirsa which slowly progressed into a shoe factory in 1994. But the
business flopped and made him bankrupt. During his trading days, he became close to Abhay Chautala, the son of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Om Prakash Chautala, and became his follower.
Meanwhile, he also came close to a powerful IAS officer, and he was the person who bought Kanda to Gurgaon in 1997-98. He also gave him cash and the list of properties that were under dispute. Kanda, started his office in sector-14 Gurgaon, where he started a readymade garment business and real estate business simultaneously. The garment business did not come up much but the real estate business gave him so much wealth that he never looked back again, reported
India Today.
Kanda also used his relative Ajit Singh, who was the local tehsildar, as one cannot rise so rapidly without the support of the local politcal honchos. In, 1999 when Om Prakash Chautala became the chief minister, Kanda touched dizzying heights of success in his business under the alleged protection of Abhay Chautala. The IT boom came to Gurgaon at the same time, and Kanda took full advantage of it. He became a major player in Haryana real estate business and his empire grew, which attracted the attention of gangsters and politicians. His tie ups with the underworld were exposed, when he was found with 4 wanted criminals in his car by the Delhi police in 2007.
In 2009, he stood as an independent candidate for assembly election and won by a margin of 6,521 votes. And for his victory he was wooed by Haryana chief minister
Bhupinder Singh Hooda and was made minister of state for home. From then on, he accumulated huge wealth and also launched airline services by the name of MDRL Airlines. But now whatever money he has made will be of no help if he gets convicted and spends a long time in jail - and also because he might become a politcal untouchable due to the suicide case.
