Government disapproves Vaidik-Hafiz Saeed meeting; asks report from Indian High Commission
India's Union minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj today clarified in the Upper House of the Parliament that the government has nothing to do with the meeting between the senior freelance journalist Ved Pratap Vaidik and terrorist Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind of 26/11 Mumbai attacks. She said that government had disapproved the meeting.

Sushma Swaraj told the members of the house that the Indian government has asked the country's High Commission in Pakistan to give its report on how Vaidik managed to meet Saeed. She said that the BJP-led government disapproves the meeting.

Vaidik is reportedly close to BJP and an key aide to the Yog guru Baba Ramdev, who is also close to the ruling government at the Centre.

The Congress-led party and the other opposition parties were adamant on the demand of debate in the house while accusing that the government had given approval to the meeting. Vaidik had met Hafiz Saeed in Lahore on July 02.

Before this meeting with Saeed, Vaidik in an interview with a Pakistani TV channel on June 30, had said that if people from Indian Kashmir and Pakistan occupied Kashmir want then the Kashmir should be given independence.

In Lok Sabha also Sushma Swaraj clearly said that Vaidik had acted in his individual capacity, and that the government had absolutely no role to play in facilitating the trip or the meeting.

A similar statement was made by the finance minister Arun Jaitley in the Rajya Sabha, who said, "This is a diplomatic misadventure of a private citizen. If there is any party that has a clear and strong line on the Kashmir issue that is my party (BJP)."
