Union government should encourage doctors to prescribe medicines manufactured by public-sector unit Indian Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited , as its medicines are cheaper and hence affordable by general public
IT REFERS to Delhi Government’s welcome decision to open 24-hour retail outlets to provide cheaper medicines to public after the idea got success in Amritsar, where such a retail outlet was first to be started on directives of Union government.
But Union government should go ahead with big expansion and popularising plan for public-sector unit Indian Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited (IDPL), which is pioneer in providing same drugs at much cheaper rate than by private companies marketing same medicines in their popular trade-names.
For example Diazepham-5 marketed by IDPL under brand-name Calmod is much cheaper than Calmpose or Valium-5 marketed by private companies. If range from IDPL medicines is increased, then at least government hospitals and dispensaries can be directed to prescribe and distribute IDPL medicines with preference.
Union government should introduce metric-system of packaging in medicines in true spirit by making it compulsory to pack medicines in units of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 gms/mltrs/kgs/litres/units unless exemption is sought for some dose-wise administration. Many drug-manufacturers pack commonly used cough-lozenges in strips of eight instead of normal 10 because commonly consumers judge price per strip rather than a lozenge.
