Govt apathy: Fire-fighters denied insurance despite risking lives
It is a shame that the firemen in Gurgaon are denied even the basic health and life insurances. One would have expected the staff to be happy and satisfied with the salaries and perks because they have a life-risking job at hand, particularly in Gurgaon where high-rise buildings provide them a stiff challenge.

MILLENNIUM CITY has around 800 high-rise buildings but when we take a look at the disaster management, daredevils or fighters come to our mind. One would assume that Gurgaon must have the best fire-fighting staff in the country but that simply isn’t the case – leave alone the training the staff is even denied health insurance.

Definitely, a matter of grave concern to know that the Fire-Fighting personnel posted at Gurgaon are not looked after well. They are the ones who bravely fight for us against any fire mishap but when their turn for welfare comes, our government ignore them completely.  It has been reported in the Hindustan Times that firemen are not even covered under Insurance while they are entrusted for saving lives of residents with no extra benefits.

First of all they are paid low salaries with hardly any benefits; at least they should be kept at par with the local Police. No allowances are paid to them. Just Rs 17 per month is paid to maintain their uniforms, how strange it sounds. They are covered only under general insurance and that too when they are on duty and not otherwise. Recently a Fireman hurt his thumb which was treated by a private hospital free of charge. Even the fire equipments provided are insufficient.

In Gurgaon there are 3 main and one sub fire stations with inadequate number of firemen that number about 100 people. They have 25 fire tenders with two hydraulic platforms to take care of over 800 high-rise buildings of the so-called Millennium City. The Platforms provided can help to access only the height of 40 metre-tall buildings while now new projects are coming up in Gurgaon with height of over 90 meters. How firemen access those heights is beyond one’s imagination.
