Govt school Nagbal lacks basic facilities, poor amenities
Apart from having no separate rooms for different classes the school has no lavatory, its a shameful example of lethargy of authorities.
THE GOVERNMENT Middle School, Nagbal is a shameful example of lethargy shown by successive governments towards the public education sector in Kashmir valley.

It was after a long period of six years the school was “upgraded” to middle level. This government school in south Kashmir continues to operate in two small rooms with lacking all facilities and attention of authorities from past years.

The 150 students enrolled at the school have been facing the difficulties of class rooms and other facilities especially during winters and are on the verge of saying goodbye to education due to lack of basic infrastructure.

Students and teachers complain that several classes have to be crammed into the two rooms at the same time. “Often we don't know whether the teacher is teaching us Mathematics or Urdu," said a student, referring to the overlapping of lectures.

Teachers too find it difficult to teach more than two or three classes simultaneously. "It’s difficult to concentrate when you have to teach different subjects to different classes at the same time,” says Rizwan Ahmed, a teacher at the school.

In the absence of separate classrooms, Rizwan says, teachers are often forced to take classes in the open. “Whenever there is rain or scorching heat we have to discontinue teaching and send the students to their homes,” he adds.

Set up in 1966, the school has a student base not only from Nagbal but adjoining villages like Branpatri, Chinparen, Kanglora, Pirtikya and lanzgund.

A parent, Nazir Ahmad Malik, laments that his children sometimes go to school after a gap of seven days. “Whenever they do go they are apprehensive because of rain or other problems they face,” he says.

To add to the woes of students as well as the teachers, the school has no lavatory and laboratory. The assembly prayers are held on a nearby road in chilly winters as well as scorching summers.

The students, parents demanded that the school should be the utmost concern of authorities. And be repaired on priority basis. Meanwhile this school should be properly activated and equipped for quality education.

When contacted, the Director of Education, Shagufta Parveen, she said that the department will look into the matter.
“We’ll ensure that proper infrastructure is setup for the school,” she said.
