Govt should follow advice of ex-CAG on vacating government bungalows presently occupied as memorials
It refers to former Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) of India, Vinod Rai in a column of a weekly news-magazine raising 'voice of nation' for utilising sprawling huge bungalows in nation's costliest area of Leyton's zone in New Delhi presently lying vacant in the name of memorials of departed political personalities.
The present central government with full determination turned down the demand of Ajit Singh to convert residence of former Deputy Prime Minister, Charan Singh (father of Ajit Singh) also to be converted in a memorial. Fortunately a note of Union Cabinet in the year 2000 put a brake on such conversion of government bungalows into memorials, otherwise whole of Leyton's zone of New Delhi would have converted as 'memorial-zone for select politicians'!

Unfortunately yet other bungalow at 6 Krishna Menon Marg (New Delhi), which was unauthorizedly kept encroached and trespassed for several decades, was also ultimately made a sort of memorial of late Babu Jagjiwanram by the previous UPA government by allotting it in the name of a government-foundation created after the late leader by the then Union Minister for Social Empowerment, Meira Kumar, who happens to be the daughter of late Babu Jagjiwanram.

Same was done in case of a joint bungalow number 12-14-16 at Gurudwara Rakabganj Road, which was likewise made a memorial in the name of late Manyavar Kashiram by bypassing all rules of not allowing any structural change in government-bungalows of Leyton's zone of New Delhi.

The present BJP-led government should take a bold step to do away with memorials in government-bungalows in Leyton's zone of New Delhi including the unauthorised ones at 6 Krishna Menon Marg and 12-14-16 Gurudwara Rakabganj Road at New Delhi by shifting memorabilia from such bungalows to sprawling samadhi-sthals of respective leaders on the banks of river Yamuna at Delhi.

Rather it will be convenient for visitors to see the memorabilia at one place rather than requiring visiting too many bungalows turned as memorials. Even memorabilia at Gandhi Museum should be shifted to nearby Rajghat (New Delhi).
