An affidavit has been filed by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers at Madhya Pradesh High Court, Jabalpur to entrust Dow Chemicals, the present owner of Union Carbide globally, to bear the entire cost involved in the detoxification process.
AN AFFIDAVIT has been filed by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers at Madhya Pradesh High Court, Jabalpur to entrust Dow Chemicals, the present owner of Union Carbide globally, to bear the entire cost involved in the detoxification remediation of the affected areas around Union carbide India Ltd. (UCIL) in Bhopal.
An estimate regarding the entire cost involved in this task has been forwarded by National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).
The study has estimated that soil remediation task through the process of landfill technology would cost around 78-117 crore. This landfill technology is actually digging a big football size stadium hole in the ground with proper engineering methods so that the toxic wastes dumped in this hole don’t comes in contact with land water. Moreover pump-and-treat method has been suggested for the treatment of toxic water.
Madhya Pradesh Govt. sponsored this study of NEERI and the report was handed over to the ministry. Tenders are also invited by the ministry from domestic as well as international firms, to handle this task of detoxification. The govt. has also decided to set 2012 as the dead line for the completion of this task.
