Graft convicted former Pak PM Nawaz Sharif, daughter Maryam arrested and jailed on return to Pakistan
Nawaz Sharif, 68, Pakistan's former prime minister and his daughter Maryam, 44, convicted in the case related to Avenfield properties in London, returned to Pakistan on the night of July 13. They were taken into police custody, arrested, and their passports confiscated before being sent to Adiala jail.

It was on July 6 that an accountability court in Islamabad had fined and sentenced Sharif to 11 years of imprisonment for 'owning assets disproportionate to known sources of income'.

The real trouble started for Sharif with the Panama Papers leak disclosure that his family held millions of dollars worth of property and companies in the UK, and elsewhere. The related companies had acquired several upmarket real estate properties near London's Hyde Park, it was revealed. This led to Sharif's disqualification for fighting elections by the Supreme Court of Pakistan last year.

Sharif and his party accused the military for his conviction. However, the military denied any direct role in the elections or the political process in the country.
