Green buildings need a decisive push
Energy efficiency has never been a topic of such importance as it has attained in the last few years. In this context, the concept of developing energy efficient green buildings is seen as an effort to not only conserve energy but that too in an environment friendly way.
BUILDINGS ARE one of the major pollutants that affect urban air quality, and various studies done over a period of time reveal that over 80 percent of the environmentally harmful emissions from buildings are due to energy consumption during the times when the buildings are in use. This implies the fact that the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings have a tremendous impact on our environment and our natural resources. Buildings are the integral part of our life and today’s modern would literally come to a halt if devoid of energy.
In today’s fast-paced life with human beings surrounded with machines, nothing can be achieved without energy. However, generating energy in itself is a tedious task and with ever increasing fuel prices and population the paucity of energy has become a day-to-day affair. Energy efficiency has never been a topic of such importance as it has attained in the last few years. In that context, the concept of developing energy efficient green buildings is seen as an effort to not only conserve energy but that too in an environment friendly way.
In the recent times, there has been a lot of talk globally about Green buildings as a means to meet our environmental goals with minimum use of energy by following certain guidelines. A Green building use structures, processes in a environment-friendly manner - including selecting the location of the building, construction, and and demolition.
Traditional building practices often overlook the interrelationships between a building, its components, its surroundings, and its occupants; and consume more of our resources than necessary, negatively impacting the environment. The basic resources like ground cover, forests, water, and energy are depleted to construct and operate buildings, raising a lot of concerns for environment conservation. Hence, arises the concept of Green buildings with an aim to address all these issues in an integrated and scientific manner.
However, for the green building concept to gain momentum, a lot needs to be done both at the government as well as the stakeholder level. The major bottleneck in popularization of green building concept in India can be attributed to the sector it being de-organized. Each group may be organized to some extent, but there is limited interaction among the groups, thus disabling the integrated green design and application process.
We are left with no other alternative but to conserve energy- and in order to cut down the energy usage, one must think of various measures during construction and renovation of the buildings. We are at a time where climate responsive buildings are the need of the hour. Hence, taking into consideration the prevailing scenario in India, it is very important to define and quantify sustainable building practices and their benefits.
