As is being understood, the new amendments are likely to ensure that honour killings are treated as murder. These would seek to put onus of innocence on the Khap panchayats, if the are found to be involved in any case.
A GROUP of Ministers will now consider the amendments to the law dealing with honour killings, which have shown a marked increase across the country. Union minister Ambika Soni told media persons today that a Group of Minster will be set up to look into the entire issue of amending the current law to deal with the menace.
In addition, the centre will also seek views from respective states while amending the IPC AND CrPC acts to deal with the issue. Soni said that the honour killings had to be brought into the ambit of law of the land. Soni further said that the government was planning to introduce the amendments in the monsoon session. Home minister P Chidambaram also said that the consultations will be completed before the monsoon session of the parliament is over.
As is being understood, the new amendments are likely to ensure that honour killings are treated as murder. The new law would seek to put onus of innocence on the Khap panchayats, if they are found to be involved in any case. Any group or Khap Panchayat, which orders honour killing woould be punished under the proposed law. In a related move, it is likely that government might end the system of 30-day notice for inter-caste and inter-religious marriage.
