Gujarat Civic Polls: BJP wins in urban region, Congress in rural areas
The counting of votes for crucial local bodies polls in Gujarat has entered into its final stage. While the saffron party BJP has secured all the municipal corporations, the Congress has done substantially well in Zila Panchayats. The poll was seen as a litmus test for ruling BJP against the backdrop of Patel quota commotion.

Congress won both Zila Parishad and Municipal Corporation in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home district Mehsana besides winning Tapi Zila Panchayat and Gandhinagar Zila Panchayat, as reported by ibnlive.com.

BJP has won the elections in the Viramgam village of 22-year-old politician Hardik Patel, who was leading the massive protest for reservation for Patels.

Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar are the six Municipal Corporations (MCs) where the elections were held. Presently, all of these Mcs are with BJP, besides, many others local bodies where elections were conducted. BJP continues to dominate other urban centres. However, Congress is making major gains in rural Gujarat.

The polls were being seen as a challenge for BJP and Chief Minister Anandiben Patel as it occurred in the absence of Narendra Modi as well as after the Patel quota stir. The Congress made all efforts to make a comeback in the state with the help of Patel quota agitation. The Patel leaders told their community members to vote against BJP, and in favour of the Congress during the poll campaign.

Polling for six municipal corporations was held on November 26 with voting participation as low as 45%. For 31 district panchayats, 230 taluka panchayats and 56 municipalities, the election was held on November 29. For other semi-urban and rural bodies, the participation was more than 60%.
