GUJARAT CHIEF Minister Narendra Modi has tested positive for swine flu, state government sources said on Thursday. A test was carried out on October 29, as Modi showed symptoms of swine flu.

A Gujarat government spokesperson said Modi will be quarantined for a week. In the event of an emergency, he will be available over telephone for consultation. The government has let it be known that there is no need to name a caretaker chief minister.

Following the CM testing positive for swine flu, the group of top industrialists, who accompanied him on a recent visit to Moscow, panicked. The entire Gujarat cabinet is now being tested for the disease as ministers were with the chief minister in a three-hour cabinet meeting on Wednesday, after his blood samples were taken.

Meanwhile, a panel of doctors has been formed to treat Modi. The Gujarat chief minister is the first major politician to be afflicted by swine flu, which has already killed thousands of people around the world, including hundreds of Indians.
