The Gujarat High Court on Friday set aside the decision of the state government to ban Jaswant Singh's controversial book. The government ostensibly wanted to prevent any insult to Sardar Patel against whom some remarks have been made in the book.
THE GUJARAT High Court on Friday set aside the Gujarat government's decision to ban Jaswant Singh's book on Jinnah. The state government had banned the book alleging that it made objectionable references to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a venerable leader of the state.
Two activists-Manishi Jani and Prakash Shah had raised objections after the government banned the book on August 19. They filed a petition in the High Court claiming that the order by Gujarat Government was issued without any knowledge of what Singh had mentioned and tried to say about Sardar Patel's role during partition in the book.According to government officials, the book carried objectionable remarks on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and thus the decision was taken to ban the book. The government had also said that the book could provoke communal roits in the state.
Jaswant Singh was expelled from the preliminary membership of the BJP following an uproar over his praise for Pakistan's founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in his recently book, 'Jinnah:India-Partition Independence'.
