Gurgaon administration to launch paper verification drive against auto rickshaws from January 1
Auto rickshaw drivers in Gurgaon need to pull their socks up as the District Administration has circulated a order for the verification of their papers. The order will be effective from January 1, 2014 where the police authorities have to verify the documents concerned with the auto drivers and their vehicle. The auto drivers will be fined and barred from plying on roads, if found guilty of possessing incorrect or insufficient papers.
The District Administration has given the responsibility to Alok Mittal, Commissioner of Gurgaon Police who will be strictly looking into the matter. He has directed all the auto drivers in the city to complete or acquire the necessary permits from Regional Transport Authority (RTA) prior to the deadline. Permits like driver's license, registration certificate of the vehicle, police verification certificate of the driver and permit of the vehicle are imperative to carry along.
“This should have been done earlier and I feel it's a right decision. I completely support this initiative by the government”, said Saad, a regular commuter in Gurgaon auto rickshaws. Whereas, Alekhya, another daily commuter feels, “Actually it does not matter, at least for me. Although, auto drivers getting properly registered with the traffic police will be helpful in reducing the crime rate Gurgaon, as in most of the cases they are the main culprits.”
If the auto rickshaw drivers fail to follow the guidelines then they have to shell out hefty amount i.e. Rs. 2000 for the first time and Rs. 5000 if fined again. “I am very much aware about the documentation for the vehicle. I got this auto rickshaw 18 months ago and I always carry the neccessary permits along with me in order to travel legally on Gurgaon roads. Although, I think drivers who have old autos might face some problem with the permits”, said Manoj Kumar, a 25 year old auto driver.
