It is for the third time that the Gurgaon Bar Association would be undergoing polls within this week. This decision had to be taken as the Punjab and Haryana High Court stated that Mahinder Singh Chauhan, who was elected as the President is ineligible as he has already held the post three times.
Prior to the two elections, which were held on April 24 (first time) and May 5 (second time), there were some who raised questions about his candidature. The Bar Association laws clearly states that a person cannot contest the polls after one has served for three terms. He served this term thrice ? in 1992, 1994, 1997, reported Times of India.
But, it has to be noticed that Chauhan had approached the court for the same, prior to the elections. Unfortunately, the court gave its verdict too late, almost three months later, so the polls had been conducted when the matter was still pending in the court. Had the matter been taken up by the court quickly, things might not have turned out the way it has.
The first elections was also considered to be a failure, as the elections, which was held on April 24, were complained of rigging by some lawyers. Hence, the election on May 5, which in spite of having an elected President , been another failure.
With so many things already having taken place, will the third Bar Association be able to find an eligible President? Only time will tell.
