Gurgaon Civil Hospital shuts ICU as doctor in charge goes on study leave
It is responsibility of the hospitals to take care of patients when they step-in with an intention to breathe again properly. Doctors are termed as "God on Earth" for many, but what happens when the health authorities become negligent towards the common masses. Some head towards private hospitals during emergencies, only if you have your pockets loaded with money but what happens to those who cannot afford the luxury of even getting treated well. There is only one option left for them i.e. to head towards civil hospitals managed by the government.

Civil hospitals in Gurgaon are flooded with people that need a constant close monitoring from the doctors with an aim to maintain normal body functions and that's where ICU steps in. Intensive Care Unit abbreviated as ICU is counted as one of the key sections of a hospital. ICU is also known as Critical Care Unit (CCU) or Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU).

One of the major Civil Hospitals of Gurgaon near Sadar Bazaar, is facing the heat of patients as its ICU is shut since last one and half month. Now, you can imagine the situation of those patients who arrive at the hospital in critical condition. Apparently, hospital authorities are clueless about the same.

When we contacted an intern doctor at the same hospital, he said, “ICUs in hospitals are assigned to a specific doctor and in our case, the concerned doctor is not available till February. He is pursuing some medical course and he needs to complete it. Unfortunately, there is no replacement available for the ICU, therefore we need to wait till he comes back.” He refused to comment further.

A clueless lady warden sitting in front of the ICU commented, “I think ICU is shut down because it needs to be repaired so that patients won't face any issues in the near future. I think it will open soon.”

Patients need to be transferred directly from an emergency room to ICU when their condition begins to crumble and specially if the patient is at high risk of complications. The hospital authorities seemed to be least bothered for the same.

“It's been thirty years since the hospital came up in the vicinity and ICU was introduced only two years ago. I won't say there is shortage of doctors in the hospital but this is something which caters to the hospital administration. I am awaken about the situation but as far as I am informed, ICU will be back in business within a week, most proabably”, said Dr. Sanjeev Kukkal, Medical Officer in Civil Hospital.

No one is assured as when ICU will be opened again for the patients. The hospital administration refused to comment anything on the same. People who cannot afford to walk-in to a private hospital have only prayers to save them.
